BlackBerry Bold as a Tethered Modem

14 06 2009

The BlackBerry Bold can be used as a tethered modem on both the Telecom NZ XT network and Vodafone network in NZ.

For step by step instructions on how to install the modem on your PC, follow KB05196 from the BlackBerry Technical Solutions Centre.

Remember to run the BlackBerry Desktop Manager when connecting.

Tethered modem traffic does not route via the RIM network therefore it is not compressed so make sure your data plan is large enough so that you don’t accrue overage.

Settings:

Telecom NZ

APN = direct.telecom.co.nz

Username = blank

Password = blank

Vodafone NZ

APN = www.vodafone.net.nz

Username = blank

Password = blank

I *love* you Geek Girl MWAH!

the only remaining question… will Telecom charge for this over and above the data plan? Hmmmmm. Will find out and try to remember to tell you all.

The answer to that remaining question is ‘No’. The data plans for XT BlackBerry include your data through the RIM Relay and TCP/IP data – Tethered Modem, Streaming, Direct TCP traffic.

The only thing you need to look out for is the non BlackBerry traffic is not compressed like the relay traffic so you’ll chew through more of your data plan, and if your plan is too small accrue overage. It’s best to choose a larger plan if you are going to use the tethered modem.
